WELCOME

While facilitating an active program for men 18-25 years, with a variety of disorders/ trauma ( all high functioning), I learned that they all have amazing skill sets that are underdeveloped and have a desire to ‘belong’- but don’t know how to access what they want and somehow, the carers and the programs don’t deliver the tools they need to learn these skills. I found not only a sense of purpose lacking but also a sense of self worth and sadly no concept of belonging to a community.

What led me here?

I have a 19year old son with Autism and a mild intellectual disability. He is transitioning from high school to the 'workforce'. He has participated in a transition program for the last 6 months, was intended to prepare him for the next step, provided little more than babysitting, instead of preparing him to move forward. He felt that he had nothing to offer, that he was not accountable and therefore could not contribute to society.

He enjoyed the playtime but without any real focus on goals, boredom eventually overtook enjoyment. A sense of one's value arises from pursuing and achieving goals. That in turn leads to confidence.

Without purpose, value dissipates and loses meaning. This was graphically demonstrated two years ago when a fellow student of my son's, finished high school and within two months tragically took his own life took his own life. Structure is vital for purpose and self worth. Navigating the transition from school to useful participation in the community produces a healthy future

My journey to this point has been an unexpected adventure. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would write this program - I am so very happy to share this opportunity with you

Everyone needs to feel that they are a valuable, contributing member of society

The extended community is aware that loneliness is a massive problem in  all demographics of society.

It becomes more prevalent where insufficient access to appropriate tools, services and education exist, especially when abilities are reduced.

LET'S CHANGE THAT

 WHAT YOU NEED

Every citizen is entitled to an education that prepares them for life. This means providing tools which lead to  a successful, valuable and independent life to the best of one's abilities.

YOU MUST HAVE

  • Access to EDUCATION

  • Rediscover PURPOSE

  • EXPAND talents and skill sets through structured education and in order to experience  a sense of VALUE

  • KNOWLEDGE of how to use the tools and how to live a successful valued independent life

  • OPPORTUNITY to develop the skills to become a contributing member of society.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THIS PROGRAM

  • Help develop purpose in youth with autism transitioning from high school to the workforce

  • Establish goals that are accessible based on individual desires and unique skill sets.

  • Help them to formulate how to say what they want for their life, job, community when they are asked – many people when asked what they want for their life cannot tell you.

  • Create a visual tool that they can use on a daily basis to stay focused on the direction they are heading – this tool can change as they complete milestones and reshape direction

  • Build a sense of community through morning chat time in a safe environment where participants can feel valued for their thoughts, experiences feelings and responses-learning safety in expression and socially appropriate communication strategies

  • Through conversation and creativity build an understanding of how  different ways of communication can affect the recipient and the message received. Build strength confidence and strategies for effective communication

  • Demonstrate different forms of communication and how to use them

  • Empower the participants to speak about their strengths and weaknesses - WITH CONFIDENCE-  So that they accept themselves and understand what they want to do and why.

THE SOLUTION

Within each of us are unique skill sets. When those skill sets are left unexplored the world misses out on the benefits that flow on to the broader community. With structure and guided group conversation and communication expansion activities the participants in the G.M.W. program will grow in confidence allowing them to express themselves and develop opportunities for creative freedom.

CREATIVITY

COMMUNICATION

SENSE OF VALUE

PURPOSE

Using visual tools and  creativity within different communication structures  in which to learn and practice how to approach communication in the workforce and amongst peers

Increase communication skills through a variety of techniques and scaffolds for socially appropriate communication. Understanding that there are many different ways to communicate – giving them different tools to practice this.

Through the daily practice of working towards what they want to do and how communication with others about what they are doing, feeling and experiencing teaches them that they are valuable in terms of their contribution and increase in the ability to communicate with their peers and colleagues.

By identifying their unique skill sets and creating a visual tool that they can use on a daily basis as they move in the direction of their desired work and life goals, they will feel a sense of purpose as they take the steps  daily towards their goal
